Permanent makeup (PMU) places pigment in the skin. That ultraviolet (UV) radiation harms skin is supported at public-health level. Whether UV makes a PMU colour fade faster is a different question, and the available evidence supports only the narrower conclusion below.
First, a fact that has nothing to do with tattooing: sunbeds carry a defined risk
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization, classified the use of UV-emitting tanning devices as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) in 2009. The pooled analysis of more than 20 epidemiological studies behind that decision found that melanoma risk rises by about 75% when tanning-device use begins before age 30.
A 2017 WHO report estimated that sunbed use is responsible for more than 450,000 non-melanoma skin cancer cases and more than 10,000 melanoma cases each year across the United States, Europe and Australia combined. The report states that people who have used a sunbed at least once in their life have a 20% higher risk of melanoma than people who have never used one, and that first use before age 35 raises that risk by 59%. The same material lists sunburn, accelerated skin ageing, eye inflammation and immune suppression as further harms.
None of this depends on aesthetics. When a client says they will "just go for a quick tan", the underlying risk is considerably more serious than faster colour fade.
What UV does to pigment: this is where the evidence stops
Laboratory research has observed that tattoo pigment breaks down chemically under UV light. In a study published in 2007, the widely used red pigment Pigment Red 22 was dissolved in solvents and exposed either to UVB (for up to 8 hours) or to natural sunlight (for 110 days): cleavage was detected in every solvent, and under sunlight the pigment was almost completely destroyed. The authors reported that the decomposition products are hazardous, with a potential to be toxic or even carcinogenic, and noted that a risk assessment is not feasible because the concentrations of pigments and their decomposition products in skin are unknown.
The boundary of that evidence is clear: it is laboratory work in solvents, on one pigment. It shows that UV can break that pigment down. It does not support a statement about how much, or how fast, a given pigment will fade on a given person.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) lists "increased chance of sunburn, redness, or scarring" among the risks of tattoos — a general risk note about tattoos, not a finding about any particular pigment or body area.
The healing period: who to ask
Freshly treated skin is healing skin. How to manage it should follow the written instructions from the clinic or practitioner who treated you, or from your own doctor — technique, area and skin condition all change what is appropriate.
If a beach trip, a ski trip (snow reflects UV), high-altitude travel or extended outdoor work is coming up, raise it at the time of booking and let the practitioner decide whether the timing needs to change.
Everyday sun protection is a skin issue before it is a colour issue
That UV harms skin is supported at public-health level. Which product and which protection level is a personal care decision — and if you have a skin history, are taking medication or are under treatment, a doctor should advise.
If a client still uses tanning beds regularly, handle that as a separate matter. IARC and WHO have already framed it as a health issue, so it comes before any discussion of colour.
Three things worth raising before booking
- When did you last use a sunbed, and do you plan to keep using one?
- Do you have beach, ski or extended outdoor plans coming up?
- Is your skin currently under any treatment or medication?
All three are worth settling before you book, so the practitioner can decide whether the timing needs to change.
