"Undetectable" means the shape does not read
When a client asks for a result that is undetectable, they usually mean: no hard boundary, no shape that reads as drawn on. That is not the same as "make the colour very light". A light but even block of colour still reads as a silhouette.
A natural-looking result can be discussed through three visual choices:
- Form follows existing structure, or covers it;
- Density is built with falloff, or laid evenly;
- Tone is read from the base, or taken from a swatch.
Everything else — which pen, which shade, which movement — is a means of carrying out those three choices. The means do not constitute naturalness on their own.
Visual choice one: how depth enters the conversation
Depth is one of the variables a practitioner controls.
The mechanics are clear. Cosmetic pigment typically sits around the epidermal–superficial dermal junction, roughly 0.3–0.5 mm. The FDA defines PMU as a tattoo in which a needle inserts ink into the skin. ECHA explains why tattoo ink has to reach the dermis: the epidermis renews continuously, so anything stopping there sheds with it. Too shallow and it does not hold.
The clinical literature records a separate cost: fibrosis and scarring are seen especially after microblading.
Visual choice two: how density is previewed
Density can be laid evenly or with falloff — for example carrying colour through the mid-section and tail while staying sparser at the front and along the edge. Either is a choice to raise and preview during the design conversation.
That belongs to technique, so no parameters are given here. The 1R single needle runs across eight diameters from 0.16 mm, alongside RL, RS, Flat, MG, CM, XF and 0411U configuration values — these are the options recorded on the product.

Visual choice three: how tone is discussed against the base
This is a direction to raise and preview in the design conversation, not a rule that guarantees an outcome on its own.
Why colour shifts. Three traceable mechanisms are at work. Sunlight and laser light break pigment molecules down, producing new compounds that are released from the treated area (colourants research). ECHA notes that chemicals in these inks can remain in the body for life and that pigment particles can migrate to organs such as lymph nodes. And the clinical literature lists fading and colour shift as late-onset complications, adding that late reactions are difficult to attribute to one ingredient. The same literature records that most reported allergic reactions relate to red inks. The brow and lip shades ATTO lists are predominantly reds, pinks, corals and browns.
What can be controlled. Read the base in the room rather than from a photograph. ATTO's powder lip series includes a Black Corrector and a Purple Corrector, with dedicated corrector products sold separately, the catalogue recording names and forms only. Three promises that should not be accepted
- "It will never be noticeable." Pigment changes over time; fading and colour shift are documented late-onset outcomes. What can be promised is a defined standard of work, not a permanent appearance.
- "The colour will not shift." All three mechanisms above remain in play. Variables can be reduced, not eliminated.
- "Once it is done, it is done." The clinical literature notes that facial tissue augmentation, botulinum toxin injection and facial surgery change appearance and can distort existing PMU. Brow and lip shapes drift as facial structure changes.
The bottom line
Naturalness is not produced by a special pigment or a signature technique. A useful design conversation can examine three choices: depth, density falloff, and the relationship between tone and base. Anything that presents a material-class statement as an operating instruction has skipped that conversation.
