A constellation looks like a simple tattoo — a few dots, a few connecting lines. It has one quality worth noting, though: symmetry can be specified precisely, and "I want it symmetrical" is not itself a specification. Here is how to turn symmetry into a set of measurable conditions you can check against the drawing. Gemini is the example; the wording applies to any constellation.
Fix the axis before placing the first star
Establish the axis on the skin first. A constellation's axis of symmetry can be aligned to a body reference line rather than to the vertical edge of a page. Three references are commonly used: the body midline (spine, sternum), the long axis of a limb (the centre line of the forearm or calf), and the line between bony landmarks such as the two points of the collarbone. Which one applies depends on placement; it is worth naming one explicitly so both of you are working from the same line.
Only then does the first star have a position. That first star sets the width and height of the whole figure, and it should sit either on the axis or at a defined, measurable distance from it.
The second star sets the proportion. Once the distance between two stars is fixed, every other star can be described as a position relative to those two. That is useful in conversation, because it turns "it feels wrong" into numbers you can actually check.
Gemini: three ways to compose it
Standard star charts draw Gemini as two vertical groups of stars with a short horizontal link between them. Carrying those connections over directly produces two zigzags; if what you want reads more like a constellation, discuss these three approaches:

None of the three is better than the others — they simply produce different images. Look at references at a few different sizes before choosing.
Three checkable conditions for symmetry
One. Is the transfer a single pass or staged? These are two different workflows; ask which your artist intends to use and why.
Two. How will the connection width be kept consistent? The look of a constellation comes from whether the connections are the same width. You can check this directly on the drawing: is every connection the same width?
Three. Is there a tiering rule for star sizes? A common approach is three tiers by brightness — principal stars larger, secondary medium, faint ones small or omitted. Without a rule the image can look disorganised even when the positions are symmetric, so it is worth agreeing before sign-off.
One question to settle in the room: will this placement be repeatedly stretched in daily movement, and will that affect the symmetry? It needs the skin and the person in front of you.
