There is no shortage of ready-made answers to whether permanent makeup is worth it: hours saved, multiples returned, how it compares with daily makeup. Those figures look specific, but they all rest on assumptions that are never stated — how many minutes a day you actually spend, what you value your own hour at, and whether touch-ups and removal are included.
This article does not give you a number. It gives you a method. Put in your own figures and you will get an answer that means something for you.
Time: three steps
- Minutes per day you spend on the makeup you genuinely want to eliminate (for many people, brows and lips).
- Multiply by 365 and divide by 60 to get hours per year.
- Multiply by the number of years you want to look at.
The formula is highly sensitive to its input. At 30 minutes a day it gives about 182.5 hours a year; at 10 minutes a day, about 60.8 hours. Same formula, three times the result. That is why any headline about "hundreds of hours saved" without its assumption stated tells you nothing.
Then subtract two time costs that are usually left out:
- The procedure day itself, including consultation, the session and the day's arrangements.
- Time for a touch-up, if your plan includes one. Whether a touch-up is needed and how long it takes is whatever you agree with your practitioner.
Cost: the procedure fee is not the whole cost
There are at least three lines, and counting only the first systematically understates the total:
- The procedure fee. It varies enormously by region, practitioner, treatment and how much correction is needed. A generic price is meaningless; use the quote you actually receive.
- Touch-up fees. Colour changes over time, so the maintenance interval is the point at which a refresh becomes useful, not the point at which colour disappears. The reasonable formula is (initial fee + touch-up fee × expected touch-ups).
- The potential cost of removal. The US Food and Drug Administration states plainly that laser removal usually takes several treatments spaced a few weeks apart, that complete removal can take many treatments and in some cases may not be possible, and that flesh-coloured tattoos, white ink and permanent makeup are particularly tricky, because the pigment can oxidise and turn black and is then no longer treatable by laser. There is therefore a scenario in which you are unhappy with the result, pay a second and potentially substantial sum, and still cannot count on restoring the original appearance. An honest calculation carries that line, even if it never happens.
Valuing your time: run it twice
Multiplying saved hours by an hourly wage is the most common step and the most misleading one. It only holds if you would really use those hours for income-generating activity. If the 30 minutes you save goes into scrolling, that line is worth zero in your own accounts.
So do this: run it once at your real hourly value, and once at zero. Write both down. If both support the decision, it is robust. If it only works at the wage rate, it depends on something that may not happen.
How to check what is claimed about pigments
When choosing pigments you will meet descriptions like "low allergy rate" or "medical grade". They read like facts but cannot be traced to a source, so it is more useful to ask questions that have checkable answers:
- Public reporting shows that over 80% of the colorants used in tattoo and PMU ink are organic chemicals, and more than 60% of them are azo pigments; the pigments are not manufactured for injection into the body and generally contain impurities, with purity averaging about 70–90%. Some azo pigments are proven to release carcinogenic aromatic amines under solar, UV or laser irradiation.
- The European Commission's Joint Research Centre reports that acute allergy and delayed hypersensitivity make up the bulk of tattoo and PMU complications, and that they are unpredictable and may appear only after a long delay. So the answer to "what is this pigment's allergy rate" has to come from the supplier or your doctor — you do not have to accept a percentage nobody can trace.
- The same report states that the (skin) cancer risk from tattoo procedures has been neither proved nor excluded. That is an honest boundary, and certainty in either direction goes beyond the evidence.
- One regulatory fact is worth knowing: the FDA states it has not approved any colour additive for injection into the skin. So when a pigment label carries something like "approved", it is worth asking what exactly was approved.
None of this chooses a pigment for you, but it separates "sounds reassuring" from "can be checked".
The reasons that do not fit the formula
For many people part of the decision is simply not drawing brows and reapplying lip colour every day — less to manage, more consistent in the mirror. That is a real experience and often the part people actually care about. It cannot be quantified, so it has no place in the formula above. Treating it as your reason is fine; treating it as a number you can add in is not.

Four things to confirm before you commit
- How many touch-ups does the quote include, and how is anything beyond that charged?
- If I am unhappy, what is the removal path and roughly what does it cost?
- Where can I check the pigment compliance documentation? (Do not accept "medical grade" — it is not checkable.)
- Roughly how often will a refresh be needed? (Separate the refresh point from "completely gone".)
